terms of use
The licence to use Fleet Terminal: what you can do with it, what you cannot, and the fact that it comes with no warranty.
Last updated
The short version
- Fleet is free to use, at home or at work.
- It comes as it is, with no warranty.
- It runs commands and AI agents with your permissions, so what they do to your files and systems is your responsibility.
- Don't resell it, redistribute it or reverse engineer it.
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
The rest of this page is the detail, and the detail is what applies.
Who these terms are between
These terms are between you and Oliver Richman, an individual based in the United Kingdom who makes Fleet ("I", "me"). "Fleet" means the Fleet Terminal app for macOS, its updates, and the plugins it installs for other tools. By downloading, installing or using Fleet, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use it.
If you use Fleet for work, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for that work.
Your licence
I give you a free, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to download, install and use Fleet on any Mac you own or control, for personal or commercial purposes. Fleet is licensed to you, not sold. I keep every right in it that these terms do not give you.
What you may not do
- Redistribute Fleet, or host copies of it anywhere else. Point people to this site instead. A package manager that installs the unmodified official download from
dl.fleet-terminal.appis fine. - Sell, rent, lend or sublicense Fleet.
- Modify Fleet, or make anything derived from it.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble Fleet, or otherwise try to get at its source code, except where the law gives you that right regardless of these terms.
- Remove or change its copyright notices, or interfere with its code signature or with the checks it makes on updates.
- Send data to Fleet's telemetry server other than through Fleet itself.
- Use Fleet to break the law, or to reach systems you are not authorised to use.
Open-source components
Fleet includes open-source software and fonts, including SwiftTerm under the MIT licence, and the MesloLGS NF terminal font, which is Meslo LG with icons from Nerd Fonts. Their licence notices are in the app under Help ▸ Acknowledgements. Those components are covered by their own licences, and nothing in these terms limits what those licences let you do with them.
What Fleet does on your Mac
Fleet is a terminal. It runs your shell, and whatever you run in that shell, with your macOS user's permissions. It cannot tell a harmful command from a harmless one, and it does not try to.
That includes AI coding agents, which read and change files, run commands and reach the network on their own. Once Fleet's plugin is installed, an agent can by default also open and read your sessions, manage groups and launch profiles, and change Fleet's settings. Letting an agent type into other sessions stays off unless you turn it on. Turn on only what you are comfortable with.
To show what agents are doing, Fleet reads the transcripts they write and installs its plugin into their configuration folders, which means adding and changing files there.
You are responsible for:
- the commands, scripts and agents you run in Fleet, and what you let them do
- keeping your own backups
- following the terms of the tools and services you use through Fleet
Updates and changes to Fleet
Fleet checks for updates, and unless you turn it off, installs them itself. Each update is covered by the terms in force when it was released. I can change, add or remove features, and I can stop developing or distributing Fleet at any time. I am under no obligation to provide support, fixes or updates.
Other people's tools and services
Fleet works with tools made by other companies, such as Claude Code, Codex and Antigravity. Fleet is not affiliated with or endorsed by them, their names belong to their owners, and your use of them is governed by their own terms. The same goes for Fleet's Discord community, which is subject to Discord's terms, and for the merch shop, which is run by Fourthwall under its own terms.
Privacy
What Fleet and this site collect, and how to turn it off, is set out in the privacy policy.
No warranty
Fleet is provided free, as is and as available. As far as the law allows, I make no promises about it, whether stated or implied: not that it is fit for any particular purpose, not that it is of satisfactory quality, not that it is free of bugs, not that it will work without interruption, and not that it will keep your data safe. This does not take away rights the law gives you that cannot be excluded, which the next section sets out.
Limits on my liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes my liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited or excluded. If you use Fleet as a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your legal rights, including any right to have damage to your device or other digital content put right, or to be compensated for it, where that damage was caused by my failing to use reasonable care and skill.
Apart from that:
- I am not responsible for what a command, script or agent that you run in Fleet does, including to your data, because Fleet runs those on your instructions. Damage caused by a fault in Fleet itself is different, and is covered by the rest of this section.
- I am not liable for loss that was not reasonably foreseeable, by you and me, when you started using Fleet.
- If you use Fleet for business, I am not liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, contracts or opportunity.
- My total liability to you for everything to do with Fleet is limited to £100. That limit does not apply to the liabilities and rights in the paragraph above.
Ending these terms
You can stop using Fleet whenever you like by deleting it. The privacy policy lists what else it stores, if you want that gone too.
If you seriously break these terms, for example by reselling or redistributing Fleet, I can end your licence by telling you. Where the problem can be put right, I will give you a reasonable chance to do that first. When your licence ends, stop using Fleet and delete it.
If I stop developing or distributing Fleet, you can keep using the copy you already have under these terms.
The sections on what you may not do, no warranty, limits on my liability and the law keep applying after your licence ends.
Changes to these terms
I may update these terms, for example when Fleet changes or the law does. A change applies only to versions of Fleet released after it, and never to anything that happened before it. The release notes of the first version released under changed terms say what changed, and the date at the top of this page says when. If you don't want to accept a change, you can keep using the version you already have instead of updating.
General
- If a court decides part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If I don't enforce part of these terms straight away, I can still enforce it later.
- You can't transfer these terms to anyone else. I can transfer them to someone who takes over Fleet, such as a company I set up to run it.
- These terms, with the privacy policy, are the whole agreement between us about Fleet.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales deal with any dispute about them. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings there. If you live somewhere else, these terms do not take away protections that the law where you live gives you and that cannot be set aside by agreement.
